From Every End Of This Earth; 13 Families and the New Lives They Made in America (non-fiction) with author Steven V. Roberts

Description:
At a time when immigration in America is a topic of great debate and controversy comes From Every End of This Earth, a book about the current immigration experience as lived by thirteen immigrant families. Looking at the struggles associated with starting a new life in America, the book is broken down into five parts: The Survivors, The International Entrepreneurs, The Business Owners, The Professionals and The Women. Each section contains two or three stories told from their own unique points of view.

From Every End of This Earth corrects some of the misconceptions about immigrants coming to this country while confirming other perceptions. It speaks to the fact that many of the immigrants came here legally already possessing an education and skills while still others arrive here illegally lacking both education and skills.

Each story talks of the reasons for leaving their homes and making the often perilous journey to a new country, the common theme being to find a better life. It tells of people who are proud of their heritage but loyal to America. Many of these immigrants have started businesses, creating jobs here in America while others give back much of what they have earned here to their families and countries of origin.

Common to all their stories are the facts that they are risk takers, willing to work long, hard hours to succeed and appreciative of the opportunities America provides to them. From Every End of This Earth is a thought provoking book that will give the reader a clearer understanding and a different perspective to the continuing struggle with immigration in America.

About the Author:

Steven V. Roberts is the author of My Fathers' Houses and coauthor of the New York Times bestseller From This Day Forward. He has worked as a journalist for more than forty years, including positions at U.S. News & World Report and at the New York Times, where he was a bureau chief in Los Angeles and Athens, and a correspondent to Congress and the White House. Roberts and his wife, television journalist and author Cokie Roberts, write a popular nationally syndicated newspaper column.

A well-known commentator on many Washington-based television shows, Roberts appears regularly as a political analyst on the ABC radio network and National Public Radio. Since 1997 he has been the Shapiro Professor of Media and Public Affairs at George Washington University. A father of two and a grandfather of six, he lives with his wife in Bethesda, Maryland.

Reviews:
"If you want to feel optimistic about the future of America, give Steve Roberts' new book a read. He chronicles our national miracle of drawing together and assimilating diverse people who are drawn, as the title says, 'from every end of this earth.' Far from posing a threat, the new immigrants—with their hustle and drive and their yearning for success—are America's secret weapon in the global economic competition"
— David Ignatius, syndicated columnist for the Washington Post
